Why are scissor skills important?

Scissor skills help preschoolers build the small hand muscles they need for everyday tasks. As children practice cutting, they strengthen hand-eye coordination, improve focus, and develop better control of their fingers and hands. These skills are essential for future activities like writing, drawing, and buttoning clothes.

How to teach scissor skills?

There are many fun and simple ways for preschoolers to practice scissor skills while building confidence and fine motor strength. Here are a few easy ideas to try at home or in the classroom:

  • Cut straight, zigzag, or curved lines on strips of paper

  • Snip play dough snakes into small pieces

  • Cut pictures from old magazines for collages

  • Make fringe on construction paper to create “grass” or “hair”

  • Cut along thick marker lines on cardstock

  • Practice cutting wrapping paper, tissue paper, or coffee filters for different textures

  • Cut out shapes and glue them into pictures or scenes

Starting with short snipping activities and slowly moving to more detailed cutting projects helps children build skills at their own pace while keeping the activity fun and encouraging.

We’ve created this adorable lion craft to help your preschooler practice their scissor skills! The free download comes with two different versions for you to try. You can cut on the dotted lines to create the lion’s mane, or you can practice snipping along the edge of the larger circle and then glue on the lion’s face after! Either way, your child is practicing cutting skills and strengthening those fine motor muscles!
