My Little Camping Book Beginning Reader
Guided readers are a wonderful tool for introducing early literacy skills in the preschool classroom and at home, and we created one all about camping that you can find in our shop. Simple, predictable books like My Little Camping Book help young learners begin to understand how reading works while building confidence and excitement about books.
How to use My Little Camping Book
All you need to do for this guided reader is print the pages, cut them apart, and staple them together to create individual student books.
When can you use guided readers?
This works well as a small-group literacy activity, a guided reading center, or even as part of a camping or outdoor-themed unit. Because the book is short and repetitive, it’s manageable for preschoolers who are just beginning to explore print.
Why guided readers?
The simple sentence pattern—such as “I can build,” “I can eat,” and “I can fish”—helps children begin recognizing repeated words and sentence structures. This repetition is especially helpful for emerging readers because it allows them to focus on familiar language while using the pictures to support meaning. After reading together a few times, encourage students to try reading their own book independently or with a partner.
Extending Learning
You can also extend the learning by discussing the camping theme. Ask students what they notice in the pictures, talk about camping activities, or invite them to share their own outdoor experiences. These conversations build vocabulary and strengthen comprehension skills while keeping the lesson engaging.

This is a great art project to accompany the book The Rainbow Fish. This comes with two versions of the project, a large poster sized one for a group to do together, or an individual one.
