Fizzing Dinosaur Science

Are you studying Dinosaurs in your home or classroom? If you are, then this activity is a MUST! It’s super easy and it will keep your child entertained and coming back for more. Is there anything more satisfying than keeping your child engaged with hands-on learning? I think not!

Materials Needed:

  • Baking Tray

  • Muffin Tin

  • Baking soda

  • Vinegar

  • Liquid Water color (or food coloring)

  • Eye droppers (or use medicine droppers, spoons, anything works here!)

  • Small dinosaur toys (you can find these online, in most toy sections, and even the dollar store!)

Learning Set up

This activity takes just a little bit of prep. Here are the directions:

Place your muffin tin on-top of your baking tray (this is important for when the mixture bubbles over, less mess for you!)

Place a small dinosaur in each muffin hole

Pour a generous amount of baking soda over each dinosaur

Pour vinegar in small cups or jars and use the water colors or food coloring to add a different color to each jar of vinegar. The colors aren’t necessary, but it sure makes it more fun!

Set an eye dropper or spoon in each jar.

Set out the tray for your child to EXPLORE!

What is my child learning while doing this activity?

That’s a bit of a loaded question, but here are some of the learning outcomes with this fun science activity:

  • Your child can make a hypothesis as to what will happen when they add the colored vinegar to the baking soda. Your child will observe what happens.

  • Your child will observe a chemical reaction and understand what it means.

  • Your child will practice fine motor skills while pinching the eye-dropper, pouring, or scooping with the spoons.

  • Your child will experience learning through multiple senses as they hear the sizzle of the baking soda/vinegar reaction, smell it, and see /touch the bubbles!

  • Your child can learn and practice colors

  • Your child can learn the names of the dinosaurs they are uncovering.

Whew! That’s a lot! I think I could even go on, but I’ll spare you the details and let you try it out for yourself. Here is a little video to demonstrate just how much fun this activity is:
