1, 2, 3, To The Zoo Math Activity (free download!)

Our preschoolers love any book by Eric Carle. His vibrant illustrations captivate them every time! One book we love to add in to our transportation theme is 1, 2, 3, To The Zoo because it has trains AND zoo animals. What could be better than that? We do this fun counting activity as our math lesson the day we read this book, and we thought we would share the details, including a free online preschool lesson and counting train printable with you today.

You will need:

  • 1, 2, 3, To The Zoo by Eric Carle (find it here)

  • Jungle animal counters (we like this set)

  • Free counting train printable (grab it below!)

Instructions:

  1. Download and print the free counting train printable. Laminate for durability if you’d like.

  2. Read the book 1, 2, 3, To The Zoo together.

  3. Reread the book, and add the animals to the train car as you go (ex: add one 1 gorilla to the 1 car, 2 hippos to the 2 car, etc.).

  4. You can try to make the animals match what is in the book, or you can go crazy and make your own train zoo!

  5. Practice counting how many and talk about which numbers are more or less as you go.
