The Mitten Story Retelling Activity
Preschoolers love the classic winter tale The Mitten by Jan Brett, and it’s the perfect book for a story retelling activity! Retelling stories is a powerful way for children to build comprehension, recall, sequencing, and language skills—all while having fun.
You will need:
The book “The Mitten” by Jan Brett (find it here)
The story retelling download (find it in our shop!)
A brown paper bag
Markers or crayons

Instructions:
Download and print The Mitten story retelling cards.
Cut out the pieces. Glue the mitten onto the brown paper bag. Gather the animal cards into a pile.
Read the story together with your child.
Invite your child to help tell the story again in their own words. You can use the animal cards to help them remember the order of the story. As you go through the story, have your child place the animal inside the bag.
You can dump the bag out and retell the story again and again. It would be fun to have the child tell the story to their friends or siblings, too!
