Easter Egg Sink or Float Science

Easter is a wonderful time to sprinkle in a little seasonal science, and an egg-themed sink or float experiment is an easy way to turn curiosity into hands-on learning. This simple activity uses materials you already have at home and gives children a chance to explore early science concepts in a playful, memorable way. We have a full lesson plan and an adorable recording sheet in our shop for this experiment. Be sure to check it out!

You will need:

  • A large bin or bowl full of water

  • Plastic Easter eggs

  • Variety of items to put in the eggs (we used Peeps, gems, jellybeans, and egg candies, but some other ideas include sand, cotton balls, playdough, small animals. Anything works!)

  • Easter Egg Sink or Float Science printable (find it here!)

Instructions:

  1. Download and print the Easter Egg Sink or Float Science recording sheet.

  2. Gather your eggs and fill each one with a different item.

  3. Fill up a large bowl of water and set to the side.

  4. Have your child hold each egg and decide if they think it will sink or float. Have them write an S or an F on their recording sheet based on their guess.

  5. Have your child place the egg into the bowl of water. Have them draw the egg at the top of the bowl or the bottom of the bowl on their sheet.

  6. You can introduce the idea of density in a child friendly way if you’d like to start building that science vocabulary!
